Lost Opportunities!

Published by

on

What do you do when an opportunity knocks at your door, a good opportunity that you were not seeking, that you were not waiting for, and which came out of the blue? A normal human like you would open the door in a flick and grab that opportunity to may be never let it go, right? But the ever questioning woman that I am, the ever reasonable and rationale seeking person that I am, always, always does otherwise. I, for that matter, when an opportunity knocks, do not grab hold of it. What I do is, I open the door, pick it up, trying to make myself feel that I might just keep it this time, but instead set it aside and leave the room, the house, and run  away, as far away as I can.

It is not that I don’t ever want that chance; I am a human after all. But every single time, reasons and other plights and scrapes take hold over that door and shut its bolts.

Well, I am not complaining, I cannot. It was my decision, and I am in all means responsible for it. Neither do I regret it, nor this time, nor have I ever. Every single time I bid adieu to something which I couldn’t get hold of, I have never regretted it. Sometimes it might have made me nostalgic, a bit sentimental may be, but as time elapses I get over it.

But what keeps me going is the road beyond that door, with no limits, the free air, the cool breeze, and those tiny little droplets of hope.

The process isn’t easy though.  Sometimes is crucial and sometimes it’s a cakewalk, well it depends every time.

But every single time, I wonder what if this was my last opportunity? What if that door never opens again? What if nothing else comes up? What if I have exhausted all my opportunities? What if no other window opens up?

But then again, that is a chance I am willing to take, for the same sake of reasons and plights which I leave them.

They say, an opportunity lost is an opportunity gained, at least the optimists do. (Unlike the pessimists whose exhortation would be “An opportunity lost is lost forever) May be I gain another opportunity every single time, and may be some of these days; I am going to have to remind myself that their stock is being heaped down soon.

I could simply say, at this point, I can relate to Kazuo Ishiguro when he said, “There was another life that I might have had, but I am having this one.”

PS: Do you guys go through any of this? Do you regret your decisions? What do you think, is every opportunity lost, lost forever? Or do you think everything happens for a reason, and are a hopeless disciple of destiny?

Everything that happens does happen for the best. There is no need to rush but when something comes up and you feel that is the one for you, do grab it and excel…

It happens many times, for example I want to get into IIT,I thought of getting into it.But I couldn’t make it to because of several psychological reasons ,and family issues. But I can’t reverse that.MY parents have kept lot of money and their time, and they have gone through lot of chaos.BUT I have given them nothing,it’s kind of regret. But I can’t go to past..the guys who are bit less mertorius than me have done well in the exams..that made my parents feel depressed..they have done nothing wrong..and..I am unable to do as expected..but there is. No result..what can I do?? That opportunity won’t come again, already you are getting opprtunities..

At the end of the day we are bound to take decisions, and everytime we do there hangs this question of right and wrong, destiny and free will, optimism or escapism..one has the choice of brooding over the decisions taken, or to own up to the decision and move on to the next.
Btw..your posts are getting very introspective lately 🙂

I am good too, though wondering why someone whose poetry I absolutely adored left WP. What is the point of writing blogs, and such questions.

I understand, I have been here for more than a year now, and I have realised that this happens.
People with whom you connect, just somehow vanish, stop writing, and you are left wondering.
We just can’t keep them chained. 🙂

    very well written moushmi.
Its like a coin having two sides(oppurtunity lost may be or may not be lost forever).
I have in my life always followed rule that if i’ve lost an oppurtunity there might be an even better one coming for me.
The thing with us humans is that we regret a lot!!
Whereas why not look at the other side of it?
I’ve always segregated the opputunities that came my way into : lost, not interested, grabbed.
Keep it simple and enjoy ur life..
    Oppurtunities will come and go..
Some will be grabbed some lost..
    So cheer up..

Hey, we all have been there. Made mistakes and then regret our past decisions, but that’s okay honey! This is life and we have to be at times queer and wrong in making decisions to know the right thing in a long run.

Oh Moushmi…. this could be the title of my book (if I ever wrote one) I have far too many regrets in life. I so envy you for not regretting lost opportunities. I do. I am trying not to but I just can’t help it. I am like the number one wrong decision maker in this world. I have ruined my life in so many ways….I am coming to terms with it though, and trying to accept things but it is a long way ahead…. 😦
I hope every door and window opens up for you and you find what you have always been looking up for… ❤

      Thanks so much Mona.
When I say I never regret it, I mean that I never feel later, that I shouldn’t have done so. May be just after the decision I might regret it.
But I am a firm beleiever of fate and destine, so I think what happens, happens for a reason.
And, well, I’d certainly like to read that book of yours. It is definitely going to be amazing!!!!

I will take the fourth option of the PS. The people, place, and life we come across have an effect on our life which I believe will significantly out weigh the regrets of our past because I am a lover of these experiences. And Secondly, I don’t know really understand what constitutes an opportunity; job, love, studying at a better school, or even food. If there were ever a dummies guide showing the true meaning of opportunities, I should be rightful owner of it.
Believe that you are exactly where you should be, which has led you to write this post and myself in the name of comments blabbering.

Everything is a lesson, even the bad or missed bits. You will always attract what your heart needs. I have seen many times that if someone thinks they have missed something, a long way further down the track they were asked would they go back…and they all say no. Some say yes, think about it for a bit, then realise there is much that they are grateful for because they ‘didn’t’ go a certain way, and go back to the no answer again.
Lost loves are the main things, but each loss is teaching you to love yourself, the main purpose of this journey…so how could it be wrong?
It is all in your heart, in accepting you for exactly what you have chosen. That self love that we deny for so long, is slowly building into that beauty and happiness we have always searched for ❤
